Diseases & Infestations

The Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) is an invasive species that kills deciduous trees, with Maple trees being their favorite. The beetle’s larvae burrow deep holes within the tree’s trunk so it can feed on the tree’s nutrients and use its water supply – and once a tree is infected, there is no cure. Just like the Emerald Ash Borer, experts believe the beetle arrived from Asia in hardwood packaging, aka, wood pallets.  The beetle has not yet been identified in Michigan, but it is known to be in New York, Massachusetts, and Ohio.

The US Department of Agriculture asks that we all take 10 minutes to walk around our yards and inspect our trees for this destructive, introduced species.

Oak Wilt is a serious disease that can kill red, black, and pin oak trees and has already been detected in Wayne County.
